Article I. Definition and Purpose
The Port Oasis Clothier’s Guild is dedicated to employing, learning and teaching clothing
construction, tailoring, embellishment and textile arts as they were practiced prior to 1600.
For the purposes of the Guild, “clothing” includes garments, shoes, embroidery, black work,
needle arts, fashion accessories, table linens, spinning (with completion of garment), cloth
dyeing, leather work (as it pertains to clothing), etc.
Affiliation with the Port Oasis Clothier’s Guild is a sole endeavor and has no impact with any
specific household, group or other guilds. The Port Oasis Clothier’s Guild is a Chartered
guild of the Society for Creative Anachronism. These Principles and Policies do not
represent nor delineate Society policy and shall not be construed to be against its By-Laws
or Corpora. There are no dues or membership requirement for participation, however,
advancement within the Guild is dependent upon activity in the areas of period clothing.
Article II. Membership
The only requirement for membership in the guild is to have a genuine interest in authentic
reconstruction of period clothing. Applicants must submit a letter of interest and intent to join
the guild.
There are four levels of regular membership within the guild a member may wish to apply
for. These levels include Novice, Journeyman, Tradesman and Guildmember (see Appendix
II). Projects to be considered for initial placement must have been completed within the past
three years. Projects completed for the Novice level may not be applied to the journeyman
level and journeyman level projects may not be applied to tradesman level.
There are two levels of special membership available as well. These are; Associate (for
those SCA members who do not produce works or research but have an interest in following
or assisting in activities of the Guild, and Emeritus (for non SCA persons who wish to
participate in Guild activities and resources).
Member responsibilities include sharing knowledge with others through a mentoring
program, teaching classes, entering Arts and Science Competitions, researching textile
related subjects and producing textile works.
Article III. Guild Council
A board comprised of GuildMaster/Mistress, plus three additional members of the Council
shall administer the Guild. Other positions may become available as the group determines a
need (see Appendix I.).
Article IV. Counsel Terms of Office
To be eligible for office, a candidate must be a member (paid or unpaid) of the SCA. No
counsel member may hold a position within the counsel more than two consecutive terms (a
term being a three-year period) nor hold more than one counsel position at a time. All
counsel members are encouraged to recruit a deputy as soon as possible after accepting
office. Initially, counsel members will be chosen from and voted on by the founding
members. Future candidates must submit a letter of intent and will be accepted by a majority
vote of the counsel. A counsel member can be removed from office by a 3/4 vote of "no
confidence" by the counsel.
Article V. Voting
Guild members at the rank of Tradesman and above shall be polled for opinions concerning
new guild members. All guild members (including associate and emeritus members) may
vote on major guild activities and other matters to be determined. Their collective voice shall
be considered as one vote. Each counsel member shall be allowed one vote. In matters
concerning the day-to-day business of running the Guild, the council shall have the right to
act without consulting members.
Article VI. Amendments to the Charter
Any guild member may propose a change to the current charter by submitting a written
request to the counsel. To be accepted, the proposed change must be agreed on by 2/3 of
the counsel members and the GuildMaster/Mistress.
Article VII. Guild Meetings
The Guild shall meet on a regular monthly basis, however members are encouraged to meet
with each other more frequently and use the e-group to keep in touch.
Article VIII. Guild Activities
Guild members are encouraged to teach classes and participate in SCA demonstrations on
a regular basis. Guild demos, workshops etc, will be encouraged at events and the
GuildMaster/Mistress should contact autocrats to make arrangements for space.
